my daily project has turned into a lifetime of finding, seeing and experiencing love EVERYWHERE. while i can no longer post daily (the craziness of graduation, TFA, moving cross country is time intensive)- I will continue to share love I find in the little nooks and crannies of everyday live. Yesterday I sat, stood and cheered at the beautiful Yankee stadium throughout the NYU 2011 Commencement. It was an amazing celebration (as only NYU can do) of my and my fellow graduates amazing accomplishments.
Over the past few days and weeks I have been reflecting on my journey at New York University and my many adventures before. I am grateful for all my various experiences in NYC, Washington DC, Michigan & even Ohio- for they have all led up to this moment and I have learned many things about myself and my life along this path. I’ve lived in tiny closet-like apartments, back at home, and with fun freshman in NYU dorms; I’ve worked at nonprofits, schools and even on Capital Hill; I’ve met President Obama and Kermit the Frog; I’ve seen shows, traveled abroad, practiced yoga, played & coached soccer… and the list goes on and on. All of these things have led up to this point, another new point in my life. After all of these experiences and two years of hard work at NYU I am finally Rebecca Lewis, Master of Public Administration (Public & Nonprofit Management and Policy)- yes, that’s a mouthful :)
I wanted to take the time to thank all of you in my life who have supported me and had fun with me along the way. Recently I’ve become more self-aware and reflective about my life and my daily happiness. I’ve even started a gratitude journal, which I write in everyday about all of the things for which I am grateful. I am most certainly grateful for all of you in my life and all of the wonderful happiness and kindness you have shared with me.
President Clinton was the commencement speaker at my graduation in Yankee stadium yesterday. His message hit me deep in my soul as he discussed our shared future and creating a better world together- we do have an amazing opportunity to do this and I hope with my career in public service I will be aim to be a part of the shared and positive community. Below are two pieces of advice he gave to the graduates, which I believe are empowering words for every person to hear:
“The great challenge of your life will be how to live out your personal story, pursue your personal dreams, enjoy your personal compassions…in that pursuit I have only two pieces of personal advice… first…you should strive to find happiness everyday and not believe it comes at the end of a journey… the second piece of advice…there is something to be said for not quitting, not giving up and showing up through the difficult times as well as the easy ones. If you pursue your dreams you can’t quit when you fail, you can’t quit when you mess up and you can’t quit when life seems to deal you a tough hand. You have been given the tools to triumph. Now it is up to your will, your mind and your heart.” -President Clinton, NYU Commencement 2011

So much Love lately, although I haven’t been posting because of my crazy graduation/transition/etc…. Here is an excerpt from President Clinton’s commencement address:
